Call the Midwife viewers fear much-loved characters will be killed off next week as tonight's episode ended in tragedy.

Much-loved characters could be seen lying unresponsive in the final moments of tonight's show on BBC One, which ended in a dramatic train crash.

The collision between two trains came after driver Lionel Corbett took ill in the drivers seat, sending the train speeding through a red light and into another train.

Beloved characters Dr Turner and Sister Julienne were among those travelling on the busy train when the tragedy took place.

And the episode ended with footage of the pair lying unresponsive on a smashed-up carriage.

The dramatic end sent viewers and fans of the show into panic that some of their favourite characters may have been killed off, with many people taking to Twitter to share their fears.

One person said: "Nope. Dr Turner can't die. He and Tim have to go into practice together, and he has to grow old with Shelagh telling him off about sneaking a crafty pie.

And what will Poplar do without the best GP in London? #CalltheMidwife"

Another added: "I miss me from an hour and a half ago, the girl who hadn't yet watched Sr. Julienne and Dr Turner get on that train. #CallTheMidwife"

While one person posted: "Goodness I’m all washed out watching this episode how dramatic hope everyone we love in the program is safe .. dr Turner and sister julienne love them … #CalltheMidwife"

And another said: "How am I going to function all week not knowing who survived or dies #CallTheMidwife"

Call the Midwife will continue on BBC One at 8pm on Sunday.
