Call of Duty: Warzone 2 - Everything you need to know about the highly-anticipated sequel

A new era for the Call of Duty franchise will soon be beginning with the anticipated release of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.

While the release of a second rebooted Modern Warfare title is reason enough to get excited, it will also be marking a new iteration of Activision's popular battle royale series. It was announced that the new Warzone will be led by Infinity Ward, who worked on some of the original Modern Warfare titles, as well as Raven Software.

Activision has already teased that Warzone 2 will come with "new technology, new features, and new gameplay that work seamlessly together". The publisher has also assured that community feedback has been heavily considered during the development process of the new battle royale, although the extent and results of this will likely not be seen until after launch.

Information surrounding Warzone 2 is still being drip-fed to fans, however, we have broken down everything that players need to know so far including a release date, platform availability, cross-progression and more.

When is Warzone 2 coming out?

While we have an official release date for Modern Warfare II - October 28 - an exact release date for Warzone 2 has not yet been announced. However, Activision has inferred that it will launch near the end of 2022.

Call of Duty's official website states: "October 28 marks a new beginning for Call of Duty, starting with the release of Modern Warfare II . Soon after, a wholly new Warzone will launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare II universe."

What consoles will Warzone 2 be available on?

Fans who are still playing on last-gen consoles need not worry about Warzone 2. It has been confirmed that the fame will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Battle.Net and Steam.

However, it is not yet clear how optimised Warzone 2 will be for older consoles, considering Activision stated it will come with "new technology". But, it is safe to assume that graphic performance won't be as stellar on older consoles when compared to the newest ones.

What new gameplay features will Warzone 2 have?

Considering the fact that Warzone 2 will become its own standalone title, rather than an update to Warzone, it is safe to assume that some hefty gameplay changes will be introduced to the series. What these changes are, however, is not yet clear since official gameplay footage is yet to be released.

However, a Call of Duty insider hinted that a swimming mechanic will be introduced to the game.

Will my progress from Warzone carry on into Warzone 2?

It is not yet clear whether a player's weapon and account progression on Warzone will carry on into the sequel. The Call of Duty official website states: "Today’s Warzone will continue as a separate experience that will include a continuation of player progression and inventories within that Warzone experience. We can’t wait to share more details soon."

What this does mean is that Warzone will continue to be supported even after the release of Warzone 2, however, we will have to wait and see how meaningful this support will be.
