Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Warzone sequels quietly confirmed

Remember when everyone thought that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision might mean less Call of Duty? Well before that goes through, we’re getting two new Call of Duty games in the near future: a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and a Warzone follow-up.

The news was quietly dropped at the very end of a community update from the Call of Duty team that gestured at what’s coming later this year. The post confirms earlier reports of a “Warzone 2” and Modern Warfare sequel that came out following uncertainty of the Call of Duty franchise remaining on PlayStation, which Microsoft says will continue as usual. It also makes clear that development on the next mainline Call of Duty entry is being led by Infinity Ward, which recently teased its involvement in this year’s game in a completely unsubtle tweet.

Infinity Ward, which made Modern Warfare and co-developed Call of Duty Warzone with Raven Software, has been theoretically working on this title ever since handing over Warzone to Raven. While the post goes into more detail about updates to Warzone, as the game has been in a noticeably busted state for months now and has suffered delays because of it, the post also briefly looks ahead to tease players with info on what’s in the works in the long term.

Details on the two upcoming games are scarce, but the post does mention that that the titles “are designed together from the ground-up.” That last note isn’t surprising given the original Warzone sprang from Modern Warfare in early 2020 and was built on the very same engine and assets. The Warzone sequel will also boast an “all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode.” Both sequels are being led by Infinity Ward.
