There has been a call for traffic calming measures on a South Belfast road 'before it's too late', after a car crashed through fence posts into the garden of a house.
South Belfast Alliance representatives are calling for safety improvements on Knockbracken Road following the collision which took place on Wednesday, March 8, when a car came off the road at the corner of Brackenwood Crescent, collided with fence posts and came to a stop in the garden of a property.
Councillor Michelle Guy said: “The community living in the area have been calling for meaningful action to address the issues around speeding for quite some time, and this incident has heightened concerns. It has long been their opinion that it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, and I am just relieved that on this occasion that no one has been injured.

“Paula [Bradshaw] and I have been working to install a Speed Indicator Device at this bend, which I am pleased to say has been approved and should be installed by the end of March. However, this incident only validates the need for permanent traffic calming in this location, and I have written to both the PSNI and the Department for Infrastructure to request further intervention for this area.
“I am worried that if this matter goes unaddressed, we could see life-changing injuries or loss of life, and I am particularly fearful for the school pupils who catch the bus at this location.”
South Belfast Alliance MLA, Paula Bradshaw said that she has written to the Department for Infrastructure regarding Knockbracken Road and hopes that action is taken there "before it is too late."
She said: “This has been a long-standing issue, and whilst I recognise the work the Department has done around enhancing signage and warnings at the corner, it is clear now that more needs to be done. I have also written to officials to request this location be reassessed for traffic calming and am pleased that a commitment has been made for this to be carried out in April.
“I am grateful to councillor Guy for being such a strong advocate on this issue and hope that the responsible public bodies will recognise the need to take action before it is too late.”
