Californians whose homes are in neighborhoods still under evacuation orders are being urged to stay away, even if the fire on their street has been extinguished, according to the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Cal Fire Battalion Chief David Acuña emphasized the potential dangers that persist in these areas, including downed power lines that could still be live, uncertainty surrounding gas lines, and the toxic nature of the ash left behind by the fires. The ash contains petroleum products from the burned houses, making it hazardous for families to return.
With the National Weather Service issuing a warning of 'extremely critical' conditions that could lead to the fires spreading, Acuña stressed the importance of remaining vigilant. He cautioned that no one should let their guard down, as the entire region needs to be prepared for possible evacuations.
'We need everyone from Ventura to San Diego to understand that evacuation orders are still a possibility,' Acuña stated.
