California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken swift action in response to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the state, resulting in the destruction of thousands of structures and the evacuation of over 100,000 individuals. In an executive order issued on Thursday, Governor Newsom addressed the urgent housing needs and recovery efforts for wildfire victims.
One of the key provisions of the executive order is the suspension of rules that would typically prevent the placement of mobile homes, manufactured homes, and RVs on private property outside of designated mobile home parks during the rebuilding process. This measure aims to provide temporary housing solutions for those displaced by the fires. Additionally, fees for mobile home parks have been suspended for the next three years to alleviate financial burdens on affected residents.
To further assist those impacted by the wildfires, Governor Newsom has directed the state's Office of Emergency Services to identify fairgrounds that can be utilized to provide support and shelter. State departments have also been instructed to collaborate with local governments in developing temporary housing plans for individuals directly affected by the fires.
In an effort to expedite the rebuilding process, the governor has extended exceptions to certain environmental protections and implemented a ban on price gouging for hotels, motels, and rental housing in Los Angeles through March. This measure aims to protect wildfire victims from exploitation during their recovery period.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom has announced an extension of state property tax deadlines for individuals impacted by the wildfires, providing them with additional time until April 10, 2026, to fulfill their tax obligations. This extension seeks to offer financial relief to those struggling in the aftermath of the wildfires.
