A California fire captain who helped fight the Eaton wildfires was stabbed to death in a home, and police believe she knew her killer.

Rebecca Marodi, 49, was found inside the home on Feb. 17 at about 9 p.m., police said. She had multiple stab wounds, and despite life-saving measures being deployed, she died at the scene.

"Investigators suspect that the victim knew the perpetrator and are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident," police said in a statement. "Currently, the motivation and circumstances surrounding the homicide remain unclear, and detectives are diligently gathering more information to establish the facts of the case."

CAL FIRE confirmed Marodi's death in a social media post.

"It is with great sadness that CAL FIRE reports the off-duty death of Fire Captain Rebecca "Becky" Marodi," the post states. "Captain Marodi served over 30 years with CAL FIRE, primarily in Riverside County, but also serving time in San Bernardino and San Diego Counties. The tragic loss of Captain Marodi is mourned by her family, friends, and her CAL FIRE family."

Neighbors said they were shocked at what had happened.

"I think at first, when we heard it, we were shocked. It's a fire captain. You assume they're safe," Kim Johnston NBC-7 in San Diego. "A little unsettling, I'd say, and not knowing who and that they haven't found someone is scary."
