But California is always on alert for the next destructive quake.
Earlier this month, on May 12, California experienced one of its largest tremors this year.
Two powerful earthquakes rocked the state with shaking felt in cities such as Sacramento and Chico in the early hours of Friday as the the USGS confirmed the second May 12 quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale at a depth of 6 miles.
It was one of the largest tremors in the area since quakes known as the 'Ridgequest Sequence' in 2019 and another in December 2022, when magnitude quakes of 6.4 followed by 7.1 were recorded.
Seismologist Dr Lucy Jones said on Twitter at the time: "Another quake near the town of Ferndale was recorded at 6.4 magnitude in December last year.
"Earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur in the region only around five times a year."
