The coast of California is under a tsunami warning after a strong offshore earthquake took place on Thursday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detailed that the magnitude of the earthquake is 7.3 with its epicenter 45 miles southwest of Eureka.
People in the area got a text message saying their lives are in danger and that "waves and strong currents can affect nearby shores." "Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland. Stay away until local authorities say it's safe to come back," reads the rest of the message.
It's still unclear how much the tides will rise, but atmospheric scientist Matthew Cappucci said on X that the tsunami is expected to hit the Bay Area around 12:10 local time.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
