Caitriona Balfe marks Outlander anniversary with gushing tribute as Sam Heughan congratulates her

Caitriona Balfe has penned a sweet tribute to her Outlander character.

The Irish actress has been playing Claire Fraser on the hit Starz show since 2014, alongside her on-screen husband Jamie Fraser, who is played by Sam Heughan. The series, based on the historical fantasy novels by author Diana Gabaldon, is set to continue into its seventh season next year.

Marking the anniversary of Caitriona's casting, the official Outlander Twitter page wrote: "It's been nine years since we found our Claire and we've cherished her every day since. Happy casting anniversary to the incomparable @caitrionambalfe! #Outlander "

In a gushing tribute, Caitriona said: "Wow. I can’t believe it has been nine years. I guess time flies when you’re having fun, getting to live your dream and spend it with an amazing group of people. As always thank you @Writer_DG for creating this incomparable character who has given me so much … and….

She continued: "Thanks @TallShipProds @RonDMoore @Outlander_STARZ @SPTV for taking a chance on this newbie all those years ago. What an amazing ride it has and continues to be …and of course … thanks to all the amazing fans who keep wanting more, so we get to continue this joyride!!! #Claire "

Even Heughan marked the occasion and congratulated his co-star, writing: “It’s today!!!!!” he commented alongside a retweet of the post to his 763.7k followers. “Congrats Balfe the OG Sassenach x.”

The Scots actor has starred alongside Balfe in every episode of Outlander to date so it’s no surprise he took the time to share a tribute of his own. It didn’t take long for fans to react to Heughan’s kind words, praising Balfe and the actor himself for their onscreen performances and chemistry.

One fan penned: “They couldn’t have picked anyone better than @caitrionambalfe. The on screen chemistry between you both is excellent! I can’t imagine anyone else as Claire now.” While another agreed: “How lucky we all are because Outlander has the best cast that we can dream!!! Happy Anniversary @caitrionambalfe,” followed by a series of love heart emojis.

A third wrote: "No one could play Claire any better than you have!!! Thanks so much for bringing so much happiness to so many with your amazing talent!!!" Meanwhile another said: "We are so grateful. I don’t think you’ll ever quite grasp what you’ve given us. I’ve made some of my very best real life friends b/c of this show, and everything you’ve brought to the table. Thank you. Please, please keep going. We’re so eager for as much OL as you’ll give us!"

The Outlander cast share a great bond with one another, as Heughan even said that's what he will miss most when the show is over. “What will I miss? I’ll miss the camaraderie, the people, the routine,” he said to Square Mile.

“The routine is pretty tough, pretty full on. But there’s something wonderful about it, going to work every day, you know you all are going to be f**ked but the end. It’s hard work, it’s full-on, but you’re all in it together. So I guess that camaraderie and being around people you enjoy being around.”
