Caitriona Balfe among Irish actors nominated for BAFTA awards

Dublin born actress Caitriona Balfe is among the Irish actors to make the 2022 BAFTA nominations list.

Caitriona is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Belfast, which is playing in cinemas now.

Shot in moody black and white, the film also stars Ciaran Hinds and Judi Dench as well as newcomer Jude Hill.

Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan play Ma and Pa, the parents of nine-year-old Buddy (based on Kenneth Branagh) who are faced with the choice of leaving the troubled life they know 1960s Northern Ireland or beginning a new life in England.

Speaking to British Vogue about the film, Caitriona said: "There’s a young generation who are coming up, who didn’t live through the Troubles, and there is again that kind of romanticism to having a cause and fighting for a cause."

She explained that she thinks it's "important" that people see the movie.

Jessie Buckley, Ciaran Hinds and Ruth Negga are also among the nominees for the BAFTA Film Awards.

Caitriona's Belfast co-star Ciaran Hinds is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category.

In total, Belfast received six nominations.

This year sees Caitriona and Ciaran receive their first BAFTA nominations. Meanwhile Jessie Buckley, who is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lost Daughter, was previously nominated for her performance in Wild Rose and the Rising Star Award.

Ruth Negga is nominated for her role in Passing. Ruth was also previously shortlisted for the Rising Star Award.

Sci-fi blockbuster Dune leads the BAFTA nominations this year with a total of 11.

Caitriona Balfe took to Instagram to celebrate Belfast's six nominations, writing: "Thank you Ken for bringing us all on this amazing journey and for opening your heart and soul to share your story that has touched so many.

"I'm honoured to have been entrusted with Ma and to also be nominated alongside this wonderful group of actresses (especially my Irish ladies @negga.ruth and #JessieBuckley)".
