Iowa guard Caitlin Clark has had a transcendent NCAA women's tournament, apparent to all observers.
Now, she has a hallowed record to prove it.
With her 18th point in the national championship against LSU Sunday afternoon, the Hawkeyes superstar passed Hall of Fame Texas Tech guard Sheryl Swoopes to set a new mark for most points in a single NCAA tournament.
Swoopes — the first player ever signed to play in the nascent WNBA — scored 177 points in five games in the 1993 event, leading the Red Raiders past Washington, USC, Colorado, Vanderbilt and Ohio State to the national championship.
Led by Clark, Iowa took down Southeastern Louisiana, Georgia, the Buffaloes, Louisville and South Carolina to reach the national title game. Clark scored 26 points, 22 points, 31 points, 41 points and 41 points in those respective games; since the start of the Big Ten Tournament, she's averaged 29.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game.
