Caerlaverock Castle is getting ready to take people back in time as a medieval sport returns.
The thunder of hooves and the clashing of lances will be heard on July 30-31 when Spectacular Jousting comes to the area for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The fun-packed event will see knights mount their horses and take to the main arena in the castle grounds. Visitors can explore the sights and sounds of medieval life in the encampment by meeting the knights fresh from battle, visiting the horses in their stables and seeing falcons flying overhead.
Gillian Urquhart, events manager at Historic Environment Scotland (HES), said: “Returning for the first time in two years, Spectacular Jousting is one of our best loved family events.
“Visitors will feel as though they’ve been transported back to the Middle Ages under the backdrop of the picturesque Caerlaverock Castle. We’re encouraging new and returning visitors to come along and enjoy all that the event has to offer. There’s a colourful line-up of daring competitors and their noble steeds, and we’re looking forward to an exciting weekend celebrating this iconic medieval sport.”
Caerlaverock Castle, one of more than 70 staffed Historic Scotland attractions managed by HES, is the epitome of a medieval stronghold, featuring a moat, twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements. Spectacular Jousting takes place at Caerlaverock Castle from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July, with the main jousts taking place at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. The castle grounds will be open from 10am for visitors to explore before the event begins at 11am.
