There's no denying that fashion is cyclical. The 80s is a prime example as most people agree it was just the 40s with exaggerated shoulder pads. Y2K style, which was mocked at one point, is now being redeemed with countless designers designing pieces that nod to the era. Jewelry is certainly not immune to the phenomenon. First traced back to prehistoric times, cabochon rings are the latest old-school obsession.

The rings are traditionally dome shaped and feature a smooth, polished gemstone. The very definition of a statement piece. The colorful gems make these rings ideal for the warmer months. (Yes, some can even pass for pastels.) Whether or not the rings match the outfit they accompany is completely up to you.

They may be currently trending, but the truth is cabochon rings have never really been out of style and will continue to be popular well after this latest resurgence. So they're definitely worth the investment. Thanks to the bold and precious gemstones, most require a bit of a financial commitment. We're talking thousands of dollars, which is probably why they're often selected as engagement rings.

Don't despair, however. We managed to unearth several more moderately-priced options. Carolina Herrera teamed up with Olympia Babylonia to create a colorful collection with the rings only costing $190 apiece. Mango and Zara also supply rings that fit the category with Zara's baubles the biggest of the bunch. If you can afford to spend a little more, Elsa Peretti's Tiffany & Co. creation is elegance personified.

Here are the most striking cabochon rings to flaunt this spring and summer.
