Cable installation contract signed for Hornsea Three offshore wind farm

UK engineering and construction company VolkerFitzpatrick is to install the onshore cables for Hornsea Three offshore wind farm.

The company has signed a contract with world leading developer Orsted for its latest project off the East Coast. It led the latest auction round for renewable energy deployment, with a final investment decision anticipated this year.

VolkerFitzpatrick will install 240km of cabling, stretching from Weybourne on the north Norfolk coast, to the Norwich Main National Grid Substation. It will deliver all civil works, and reinstatement of land following.

After a successful collaboration with VolkerInfra on the Hornsea Two project, Orsted said it was looking forward to working closely with the VolkerWessels UK group again in order to deliver another safe and sustainable project.

Hornsea Three senior project director, Luke Bridgman, said: “As well as providing low-cost clean energy at scale, Hornsea Three is also supporting the further development of the UK supply chain. Through our partnerships with leading industry expertise, such as VolkerFitzpatrick, we will be looking to share opportunities with UK suppliers and contractors to work on this ground-breaking project.”

In the past five years, as the Grimsby-anchored Hornsea Zone has emerged, the company has directly placed major contracts with more than 200 UK companies.

In turn, VolkerFitzpatrick will hold a meet the buyer event for prospective supply chain partners later next month.

Richard Offord, chief executive of VolkerWessels UK, said: “The team and I are delighted that Orsted has chosen VolkerFitzpatrick to install the onshore cables for the Hornsea Three offshore wind farm. We are proud that we will be able to bring to this project the skills and capabilities of our teams, developed through years of experience, along with our reputation for strong collaborative working and our continued support for the local supply chain and community.”

Hornsea Three has a capacity of 2.8GW - enough to power more than three million homes. It is located 160km off the East Yorkshire coast, and will bring the zone to 5GW, with a further project in the planning phase.

VokerFitzpatrick is also the contractor delivering the £82 million contract to expand Siemens Gamesa’s blade plant in Hull - in line to manufacture the blades for the wind farm.
