C3PO and R2-D2 appear on new 50 pence coin as Royal Mint reveal special Star Wars collection

Royal Mint has produced commemorative coins featuring Star Wars famous droid double act, C-3PO and R2-D2. The much-loved characters will grace an official UK coin to mark the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi..

The third film in the original trilogy, starring the legendary Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, and tHarrison Ford, captivated audiences when it hit the silver screens back in 1983.

Designed by the accomplished coin designer Ffion Gwillim in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company, the four-coin collection brings the sci-fi characters to life. Utilising a combination of traditional minting techniques and cutting-edge technology, each coin in the Star Wars collection boasts a special lenticular feature that reveals intriguing symbols when tilted in the light.

The inaugural coins in the collection also showcase the breathtaking landscapes of Tatooine alongside the iconic Rebel Alliance "Starbird" logo.

Rebecca Morgan, the director of collector services at the Royal Mint, expressed her excitement. She said: "We are delighted to launch an out-of-this-world collection to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. We are excited to enthuse new and existing coin collectors across the world, as well as Star Wars' thriving fan base, both in the United Kingdom and internationally, with the launch of this collection."

Coin enthusiasts and Star Wars devotees can get their hands on the first coin in this extraordinary collection, which comes in both a 50p and an ounce range, from 9am on July 10 via the Royal Mint's website.
