C.J. Stroud underwhelming in Texans’ preseason debut

C.J. Stroud left plenty to be desired after his first preseason game Thursday night.

The Houston Texans’ No. 2 overall pick had just two drives in the exhibition opener at the New England Patriots. Stroud completed two passes on four attempts for 13 yards and an interception.

The pick occurred on Houston’s opening drive, the result of a third-and-21 decision two plays after losing 15 yards on a sack.

On the Texans’ second drive, Houston benefited from a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty, which gave the Texans first-and-10 at their own 38-yard line. However, the drive stalled out three plays later with Stroud picking up two yards on a third-and-4 from the Texans’ 44.

Quarterback Davis Mills spelled Stroud with 1:52 to go in the first quarter.
