Stir that pot, Kay Adams. The FanDuelTV host interviewed former New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson on her “Up & Adams Show” program and touched on a variety of topics — including his infamous scrap with Michael Thomas at a Saints practice session. The two are set to cross paths again when Gardner-Johnson’s Detroit Lions visit New Orleans in Week 13.
Credit to Gardner-Johnson for keeping his composure when Adams asked him to sample some trash talk. He didn’t exactly hold back against the Georgia Bulldogs (heated rivals with his Florida Gators) or Philly cheesesteaks (the signature sandwich of the last city he played football for).
“He knows what time it is, and I’m not going to say nothing about that. He knows what time it is,” Gardner-Johnson added with a grin.
When pressed for details, Gardner-Johnson laughed and advised Adams to ask their old coach: “Call Sean (Payton).”
Still, he gave us something. Gardner-Johnson could have jumped down from the top rope and taken the opportunity to really let loose, but he instead kep things professional, even if the message came through gritted teeth: “He better not come my way with that crazy stuff. Keep it on the field, keep it at that. Keep it at that.”
We’ll never know for sure what led to the two coming to blows, because anyone who knows for sure isn’t talking. At the time a bogus report from a fake Twitter account was picked up by bloggers and some podcast hosts, spawning the “Slant Boy” nickname for Thomas, but that’s not it. Unless Thomas feels like clearing the air himself, it sounds like we’ll need to take Gardner-Johnson’s advice and go ask Payton — who probably isn’t eager to rehash the story himself.
