Busy Swansea city centre car park partly closed as electrical fault plunges it into darkness

A well-used car park in Swansea is partly closed due to an electrical fault plunging the upper floors into darkness. St David's multi-storey car park is at the heart of the city centre and well-used by those who visit and work there, along with users of the LC gym.

Spaces are at a premium when the car park is fully functional, with it usually having 413 spaces and 38 disabled spaces. But recently, the car park has been dramatically reduced as a result of the problem, with a number of levels closed off, leaving many unable to use the pay and display facility.

Levels one and two remain open until 5pm instead of its usual 24 hour availability. Swansea Council has apologised for the inconvenience, and explained how it was working to rectify the problem, whilst directing people to alternative car parks in the meantime. A Swansea Council spokesman said: “Recent heavy rain has led to an electrical fault at the St David’s multi-storey car park, which is affecting some of the lighting there. So that people are not being asked to walk around in the dark, it means that both the stairwells and floors three and above are now temporarily closed.

“Floors one and two of the car park currently remain open until 5pm, although we’re working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and are exploring temporary solutions that could enable the car park to open for longer in the meantime. Several other car parks are available short distances away in the area, with more information at swansea.gov.uk/carparks

“Park and ride services on Fabian Way and at Landore are also available for £1 per vehicle a day. St David’s car park season ticket holders affected by the partial closure can use our pay and display car parks instead. We apologise for any inconvenience and will let people know once the car park is back fully operational.”

In an e-mail sent to LC Swansea members, the gym's general manager Rachel Curtis wrote: "You may have noticed that Swansea Council are experiencing some difficulties with St David's Car Park as a result they are limiting access to this car park due to a lighting failure which is making access in low daylight hours dangerous.

"St David's Car park will only be open between the hours of 9am and 5pm, until the lighting issue is resolved. We appreciate that this situation is not ideal and we appreciate your understanding during this time. As a member you are also able to use your member car parking pass at both East Burrows and Paxton Street car parks. We are working closely with Swansea Council to ensure that this issue is resolved as quickly as possible, and again we appreciate your patience during this time."
