Busy road closed and traffic queuing as 'sinkhole' opens

A busy road is closed in both directions and traffic is queueing after a "potential sinkhole" opened.

Liverpool City Council have closed a section of Lodge Lane in both directions after the sinkhole opened in the middle of the carriageway on Monday, July 18. Council officers attended the road and have placed barriers around the area, stopping traffic from being able to pass.

Teams are now working to figure out what caused the hole to open up in the road, and if it is a highways, electrical or water issue.

A spokesperson from Liverpool City Council said: "Due to a potential sinkhole on Lodge Lane, in Liverpool 8, a temporary road closure has been introduced between Bentley Rd & Fern Grove to allow for investigation works. Please follow diversions via Princes Ave and Upper Parliament St."

Two sinkholes have previously opened up in the city over the last month, with one taking over Beech Street in Kensington, and another on Albert Road in Widnes.

Traffic surrounding the closure is queueing according to AA Traffic sensors.
