A popular city centre street is set to become one-way under plans agreed by a Council subcommittee.
Fishamble Street, which links Dame Street to Wood Quay, will be restricted to northbound traffic under the plans. Cyclists will be permitted to continue to cycle in both directions.
Two lanes of traffic on the narrow and steep street has caused damage to kerbs which drivers often have to mount to allow the other lane of traffic pass. The practice also poses a health and safety risk to the public.

The volume of northbound traffic on the street is 93% greater than southbound traffic. There were also concerns about pedestrians crossing the Fishamble Street/Lord Edward Street junction as the island between is quite narrow for the heavy flow of pedestrians.
It was agreed that the new traffic measure will be implemented. Councillors on the South East Area Committee also discussed the future of Parliament Street which has seen its traffic volume drastically reduced since Capel Street, which fed traffic onto the street from the other side of the Liffey, was fully pedestrianised.
Three options were presented to councillors: Making Parliament Street public transport only; Reduce Parliament Street to one lane of traffic, and making it "traffic free". Councillors agreed to have officials do more research on the three options and reconvene the issue in December.
It was envisaged a traffic ban on Parliament Street would eventually link with the plans to pedestrianise College Green and the already pedestrianised Capel Street.
