South West chamber of commerce Business West has announced executive director James Durie is set to leave its leadership team at the end of the year.
Mr Durie, who is also chief executive of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative, is stepping down having been with the organisation for 21 years.
The former commercial property consultant, who is considered one of the most influential people in the West of England’s business community, said he would be embarking on some “new and exciting challenges”, details of which he would reveal in the New Year and coming months.
Mr Durie said: “I have had the privilege to work with so many amazing people in my role in the development of Business West Chambers and Initiative and the important work it does and different roles it has been able to play.
“I now feel ready for a change of emphasis and will be embarking on new and exciting challenges, more details of which I will be sharing in the New Year and coming months.
“As ever and particularly in this current economic environment, Business West has lots to offer companies to ensure they survive and thrive, and I wish them every success as they continue on their mission to do this.”
Business West said Mr Durie had played a “significant role” in representing firms across the region and influencing “positive change”.
The chamber’s managing director Phil Smith said: “James will be much missed by his Business West colleagues, our members and the many partners we work with. He has brought knowledge, skills, and energy to his role, demonstrating great passion for Bristol and the West of England."
Mr Smith went on to thank his colleague for his “great commitment” and “invaluable contribution”, before wishing him “the very best” with his new venture.
Before his departure Mr Durie will assist Business West’s newly appointed director of membership to integrate all of its teams and membership levels across Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire.
