The US owners of Bushmills Irish Whiskey have opened a new £37 million distillery adjacent to its 415-year old County Antrim site to boost production capacity.
Proximo Spirits said the move is in reaction to growing demand for Irish whiskey across the globe and is one part of a £60 million expansion project which has also seen additional aging facilities added.
A total of 10 copper pot stills at the new Causeway Distillery have been designed specifically to match those at the Old Bushmills Distillery and will enable the production of the same quality and flavour of single malt whiskeys in both distilleries, according to Proximo.
Bushmills is the hero product amongst the US drinks giant’s whiskey range. It also owns Jose Cuervo tequila as well as a wide range of vodka, rum, gin and liqueurs.
Proximo bought Bushmills in 2014 from Guinness owner Diagio and has enjoyed a resurgence in appetite for the north Antrim whiskey since then, which it has matched with steady investment in its production.
