Bushfire threatens homes on Tasmania's east coast

The out-of-control fire is threatening homes on Dolphin Sands Rd in Dolphin Sands, Tasmania. (HANDOUT/TASMANIA FIRE SERVICE)

A bushfire is threatening homes on Tasmania's east coast.

The blaze burning between Yellow Sand Banks Rd and the end of the Dolphin Sands Spit at Dolphin Sands is out of control, authorities said in an emergency alert on Sunday night.

Fourteen fire appliances are being used to fight the fire which was reported at 6pm and was fanned by strong winds.

The blaze is travelling east on Dolphin Sands Rd, which is closed at Yellow Sandbanks Rd.

Residents are warned it is too late to leave and are advised to take shelter.

Those who were able to escape before the fire cut them off were advised to go to an evacuation centre at the Swansea Town Hall.
