Buses told not to stop at Gorseinon station after 6pm as anti-social behaviour issues are so serious

Buses have once again refused to stop at Gorseinon station after 6pm due to continuing problems of anti-social behaviour and vandalism plaguing the area. First Cymru announced on February 9: "Due to several instances of vandalism we will not be serving Gorseinon Bus Station after 6pm until further notice. This change will impact our 16 and 111 services. We apologise for any inconvenience."

It is not the first time that they have taken the decision to stop buses from pulling in there on routes. In September 2021 we reported how it took the temporary move of not stopping there after 6.30pm to protect the "safety of its staff and bus passengers" after reported incidents of a bus driver getting attacked and of youngsters lifting the back of a bus and causing damage to one of the vehicle's engines.

And on February 9 last year a 14-year-old boy was beaten up and stabbed at the bus station by a gang of fellow teenagers. As horrified members of the public looked on the youngster was repeatedly punched and kicked and hit with a metal bar before being stabbed in the chest with a knife. The person who wielded the blade was also aged just 14. The victim suffered a stab wound to chest and a 7cm-long cut to his liver and lost a large amount of blood. He was tended to by passers-by until paramedics arrived. You can read more about that by clicking here.

A walk around Gorseinon bus station shows evidence of vandalism including graffiti and smashed screens. The bus service says normal service is set to resume from February 15 but only with an enhanced police presence to ensure it is safe to do so.

A statement from First Cymru read: "First Cymru would stress that the safety of their customers and staff is always the priority and have confirmed that their buses have been diverted in the evenings given the issues at Gorseinon Bus Station. They have been working with the local authority and the police to resolve this situation as quickly as possible and are, as a result of that work, planning to resume evening stops on February 15 supported by an increased police presence. They encourage customers using this stop to check social media updates." South Wales Police has been contacted for comment.
