Busanan settles for second at Swiss Open

Busanan Ongbamrungphan missed out on a chance to win her second title of the year after losing to Pusarla V Sindhu in the final of the US$180,000 BWF Swiss Open in Basel on Sunday.

The Thai world No.11 was beaten 16-21, 8-21 in 49 minutes by the seventh-ranked Indian in the women's singles title match of the World Tour Super 300 event at St Jakobshalle in Basel.

Busanan, who was seeded fourth in Basel, received $6,480 (approximately 217,080 baht), while Sindhu, the second seed, got $13,500 (452,250 baht).

Sindhu had beaten another Thai hope Supanida Katethong in the semi-finals on Saturday. Busanan had defeated Kirsty Gimour of Scotland in the other last-four match.

"Busanan has been having great results so far this year," said Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand. "She won the title in India earlier this year and now finished runner-up in Switzerland.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan, left, poses with her runner-up award alongside winner Pusarla V Sindhu.

Patama added, "Cream [Busanan's nickname] will be an important player for Thailand in the upcoming Uber Cup, which will be held in Thailand in May.

"I have high hopes for her this year that she will keep improving and break into the top 10 in the world rankings this year."

Busanan won the India Open -- a Super 500 tournament -- in January, beating Supanida in the championship match.

Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria captured the women's doubles crown after beating Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau of Germany 21-14, 21-12.

Men's singles title went to fourth seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, who defeated HS Prannoy of India 21-12, 21-18.
