Bus fire on M74 as vehicle goes up in flames forcing road closure

The M74 Northbound is currently closed due to a large fire on a bus. Emergency services raced to Junction 3A -Junction 3 at around 10.35am after reports of the vehicle going up in flames on the busy carriageway.

Pictures from the scene show the bus on layby covered by flames and smoke. The black smoke from the fire billowed across the carriageway forcing emergency services to close the road to other vehicles.

Drivers are being urged to use an alternative route. There are no reported casualties.

Traffic Scotland advised the wait time is currently around 20 minutes and increasing.

Traffic Scotland tweeted: "The Northbound carriageway is closed due to a vehicle fire.

"Use #Altroute if possible and do #TakeCare on approach.

"Fire service and police are in attendance."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.33am on Monday, 22 August to reports of a bus on fire on the M74 Northbound. “Operations Control mobilised three appliances and firefighters are working to extinguish the fire affecting one private coach.

"There are no reported casualties.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.35am on Monday, 22 August, 2022, officers were called to a report of a bus on fire on the M74, near to junction 3.

"Emergency services are in attendance."

A spokesperson for First Bus said: “We can confirm that one of our buses was damaged in a thermal incident on the M74 on Monday morning.

“The driver evacuated the vehicle safely and there were no passengers on board at the time.

“An internal investigation into the cause is underway in conjunction with the emergency services."
