The Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park is gearing up to throw open its doors to the public once again, the charity Glasgow Life today confirmed.
The stunning museum will welcome visitors back for the first time following a £68.25 million refurbishment when they reopen on Tuesday March 29.
To mark the occasion, organisers have scheduled a major programme of events over the first weekend and visitors will be able to enjoy outdoor activities while visiting the museum and the other attractions and experiences in Pollok Country Park.
The programme of opening weekend events kicks off on Saturday April 2 and continues until Sunday April 3, thanks to the support of EventScotland’s International Events Programme.
Among the activities on offer, visitors can enjoy Glasgow Life Museums object handling talks as well as music and dance for sessions for young children. There will also be a number of craft activities such as embroidery and embellishment, illustration, watercolour painting and printmaking sessions.
Visitors are also invited to roam around the grounds of the museum and relax in dedicated picnic spots.
Dr Bridget McConnell CBE, Chief Executive of Glasgow Life, said: “The Burrell Collection reopening will spark a new interest in the amazing objects given to the city by Sir William and Constance, Lady Burrell and in visits to Pollok House and Pollok Country Park.
“The opening events programme allows us to offer even more options to visitors over what we think will be a very busy couple of days. If you are planning a visit, please consider using public transport if you can and enjoy as much of The Burrell Collection, the fantastic events programme and Pollok Country Park as you can.”
Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at VisitScotland said: “I am delighted that The Burrell Collection is opening its doors again. I encourage families, the local community and visitors from further afield to explore this incredible museum in all its new found glory and enjoy all the entertainment on offer over the opening weekend. EventScotland is proud to support and invite you to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
The A-listed Burrell Collection has undergone a £68.25 million refurbishment which was nearly half contributed by Glasgow City Council, a quarter by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, £5.75m from the Scottish Government and £3m from the UK Government.
The work has included increasing gallery space by 35%, allowing objects from the Collection that haven't been seen for decades or have never been on permanent display, to go on show.
In total 225 displays will spread across 24 galleries.
