Burnley's Ashley Westwood consulting surgeon after horror injury at West Ham

Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson has confirmed that the club are awaiting scan results on the horror ankle injury Ashley Westwood suffered against West Ham United on Sunday.

Westwood was forced off in the first half of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with the Hammers at the London Stadium after suffering a horrible ankle injury after a sliding collision with West Ham midfielder Nikola Vlasic, who was left in tears after the tackle, with other players on the pitch also distraught at the incident.

Westwood was stretchered off and replaced by Josh Brownhill after the injury, with Westwood now undergoing scans on the injury and awaiting results on the injury.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Premier League clash at home to Southampton, caretaker boss Jackson, who took charge of Sunday’s draw following Sean Dyche’s recent sacking, admits the Clarets are still unclear over the severity of the injury.

"He is going to see a surgeon today and the doctor has gone with him," Jackson told reporters. "I don't know if it is a break or a dislocation, we will know after that if he needs an operation."

Ahead of Burnley ’s meeting with Saints, Jackson’s side go into the game 18th in the table and three points behind Everton in 17th . On Wednesday, Everton play host to Leicester City, who are still in the semi-finals of this season’s Europa Conference League.

Burnley meanwhile are still on the hunt for a new permanent manager, with just seven games left of the season to prevent relegation from England’s top-flight after six straight campaigns.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Middlesbrough and former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is the bookies’ massive favourite, with SkyBet currently pricing Wilder a 1/3 odds-on to succeed Dyche on a permanent deal.

Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen (6/1) is second on the odds list, with former England, Newcastle United and Everton boss Sam Allardyce (8/1) the third favourite, according to the bookies’ odds.

Burnley’s clash with Southampton at Turf Moor is the only match in England’s top-flight on Thursday night, with four other games taking place on Wednesday.

Chelsea host Arsenal in a crucial London derby in the race for top four. Newcastle United take on Crystal Palace, with Premier League title hopefuls Manchester City hosting Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dyche was sacked at Burnley on Friday after ten years in charge. He won 149 of his 425 games in charge, with seven of his ten campaigns coming in the Premier League following two promotions.
