Burnley decision after Dyche sacking which could affect Newcastle transfer 'target' Tarkowski

Burnley have taken the 'incredibly difficult decision' to sack Sean Dyche after almost a decade in charge. The Clarets made the announcement on Friday morning, with the team four points adrift of safety with eight matches remaining.

Dyche was due to face the media on Friday afternoon, and Lancashire Live reports the news has come as a surprise to members of the squad. Club captain Ben Mee is part of a four-man team who will take charge for Sunday's clash with West Ham.

Newcastle currently sit 10 points clear of the relegation zone, albeit Burnley do hold a game in hand of the Magpies and will host Eddie Howe's side at Turf Moor on the final day. The process of appointing Dyche's successor is already under way.

James Tarkowski is one of a host of players linked with a St James' Park switch, and the England international is set to become a free agent this summer. Dyche had not given up hope of convincing the centre-back to stay, but the appointment of a new manager and the club's Premier League status could see the 29-year-old commit to an exit and become a low-cost summer option for the Magpies and their top-flight rivals.

In a statement released after Dyche's departure, chairman Alan Pace said: "Firstly, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sean and his staff for their achievements at the Club over the last decade.

“During his time at Turf Moor, Sean has been a credit both on and off the pitch, respected by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community.

“However, results this season have been disappointing and, while this was an incredibly difficult decision, with eight crucial games of the campaign remaining, we feel a change is needed to give the squad the best possible chance of retaining its Premier League status.

“Under-23s coach Mike Jackson, assisted by Academy Director Paul Jenkins, Under-23s goalkeeping coach Connor King and Club Captain Ben Mee have been asked to take charge of the team for Sunday’s game with West Ham United. The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course.”
