Bruno runs the show, Wilson dangerous: Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal player ratings

Newcastle signed their home campaign off in style with an impressive win over Arsenal at St James' Park. The Magpies started brightly, with Callum Wilson testing the Gunners defence in the opening stages.

United pinned Arsenal in their own half, with Sean Longstaff's cross after a flowing move just kept out. Arsenal had a chance of their own when Odegaard and Saka linked up, Dan Burn blocking Saka's effort.

Joelinton saw a near-post header deflected wide as Newcastle contined to press, without forcing Aaron Ramsdale into much of a save. Allan Saint-Maximin then did just that, cutting inside and firing a shot which the Arsenal keeper turned behind.

Newcastle lost Fabian Schar to injury early in the second half, but took the lead on 55 minutes. Joelinton got away down the left-hand side and his cross was turned in by a combination of Wilson and Arsenal defender Ben White.

Wilson almost made it 2-0 when he reacted quickly to a cross from Bruno Guimaraes, only for his shot to flash over the bar. Emil Krafth then got away on the right, and Wilson's effort from his pull-back was deflected over.

Newcastle almost wrapped it up when subs Jacob Murphy and Ryan Fraser broke away but, despite exchanging passes, Murphy saw his effort saved by Ramsdale. Wilson then was agonisingly close to beating the Arsenal keeper from distance, with his long-range effort just wide as the Gunners keeper was left stranded.

But United did wrap it up minutes later through Bruno Guimaraes. Wilson's close range shot was blocked by Ramsdale and the Brazilian was on hand to turn the ball home. Here's how Lee Ryder has rated the Newcastle United player.

Martin Dubravka 8

A clean sheet on a night in which he marshalled his defence excellently. Faced 11 shots.

Emil Krafth 8

His contributions should not be forgotten this season. Stepped in for Trippier and has been brilliant. This was a solid display from the Swedish international.

Fabian Schar 7

A steady first half from the Swiss international before being literally elbowed out of the game by Eddie Nketiah.

Dan Burn 9

Rock solid. This is England form. Booted and cleared away all night and made some crucial blocks.

Matt Targett 8

Sign him up. It's that simple.

Joelinton 8

A major force in the middle. Arsenal struggled to live with him.

Sean Longstaff 8

His best game for a long time. Some superb tackles and played a wonderful deft ball forward for killer goal.

Bruno Guimaraes 9

Ran the show in the middle. 73 touches and a goal. Champions League stuff this.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Not his best performance of the season but had Arsenal on the back-foot.

Miguel Almiron 7

A hard-working display but contributions were mainly defensive.

Callum Wilson 9

What Newcastle have missed in final third all season. Offered a dangerous threat.

Subs

Jamaal Lascelles 7 (for Schar 50 mins)

Stepped in without any fuss.

Ryan Fraser (for Saint-Maximin 77)

Jacob Murphy (for Almiron 77)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark.
