A Welsh council has announced burials planned for the day of the Queen’s funeral will have to be rearranged. Caerphilly Borough Council has confirmed no burials will take place at its ten cemeteries on Monday, September 19, which has been declared a bank holiday to mark the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
However, despite posting on its website that “municipal cemeteries will be closed for the day” the council has confirmed that, while no burials will take place, the sites will be open for people to visit. Cremations at the Gwent Crematorium in Cwmbran can go ahead as planned.
Newport City Council, which is responsible for the crematorium in Croesyceiliog, has said families can, however, choose to re-arrange services planned for Monday. Funerals planned for council-run cemeteries in Newport can also go ahead with families again able to rearrange them for another date if they wish.

All waste collections across Gwent have also been suspended on Monday and household recycling centres will also be closed. In Newport, waste collections will take place a day later than usual when they restart on Tuesday, September 20.
Collections in Blaenau Gwent will run a day later than normal from Tuesday to Saturday. All of the council’s buildings including community hubs based in town libraries will also be closed.
Only essential services will be running in the borough and residents who need to contact the council will be able to use its emergency number 01495 311556. Monmouthshire is also collecting waste a day later than usual throughout the week, while all its community hubs and libraries will be closed, including Usk Post Office.
Caerphilly Borough Council will collect waste a day later than usual, from Tuesday through to Saturday. A Caerphilly council spokesperson clarified that it engaged with all bereaved families who had funerals planned to take place on Monday, September 19, and all agreed to accommodate a change of date in order not to clash with the Queen's funeral. They added that the council would have accommodated a burial that day if that was in line with the family's wishes.
People in Caerphilly borough can contact the council on 01443 875500 for general emergencies or 0800 328 4432 for social services related emergencies.
