The victim of a suspected aggravated burglary has died, with his body found on a street in Melbourne's northeast.

Police found the 33-year-old man on Eildon Street in Doncaster about 5.30am on Saturday.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Detectives believe he was the victim of an aggravated burglary at a nearby Sargent Street property shortly before he was located.

No arrests have been made and a Homicide Squad investigation is underway.

"This is a tragic set of circumstances," Inspector Carlie Kohler told reporters on Saturday.

"The investigation is still in its infancy and we've had detectives brought down here this morning.

"We're encouraging anyone with information, even information they think is trivial, please let us know through Crime Stoppers."

It's still unclear whether the victim knew his attacker and if the aggravated burglary was a targeted incident.

The nature of the man's injuries and whether or not a weapon was used is also yet to be established, Insp Kohler said.

As investigations continue, the inspector said there would be an increased focus on community safety.

"I wanted to reassure the public that we have increased our patrols and our presence within the community, and we will continue to do so," she said.
