Watch: Burglars caught red-handed after failing to open empty tills stolen from Camden restaurant

Two bungling north London robbers were caught red-handed after stealing an empty cash register from a Camden restaurant.

Paul Haughey and Jayvan Burton were filmed struggling to open the tills after taking them from an eatery on Camden High Street in the early hours of Saturday, January 25.

Both men pleaded guilty to non-residential burglary at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Monday and are expected to be sentenced next month.

Police were alerted to the break-in at around 6am after Camden CCTV operators spotted the suspects in action.

“Even before the police arrived on the scene, their criminal plan wasn’t going well,” said Islington detective constable Michelle Andersen.

“Officers were very quick to get to the scene of the burglary, and were able to arrest both suspects before they could make off.

“CCTV shows them trying and failing to open the drawers of the cash registers. But even if they had managed that, they’d have found them to be completely empty.”

Haughey, 40, of Camden Road, will be sentenced at the Highbury court on February 18 and Burton, 41, of no fixed abode in Camden, will be sentenced at a yet to be confirmed date at Wood Green Crown Court.
