Burglar snared after leaving his blood at scene of Seaton Delaval pub break-in

A hapless burglar was snared after cutting his hand and leaving blood at the scene of a break-in at a Northumberland pub.

Lewis Wood, who previously stole a van as it was being used by food bank volunteers to deliver food parcels to those in need, was captured on CCTV smashing a window at the Keel Row, in Seaton Delaval, in order to gain entry. However, the 24-year-old and his accomplice soon fled the scene after they activated the alarm, a court heard.

Wood, he was tracked down via his DNA after injuring his hand and leaving blood at the scene.

Now, Wood, of Backworth Court, Backworth, could end up behind bars after he appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court to plead guilty to attempted burglary of a non-dwelling. His case was adjourned until February 7 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Paul Anderson, prosecuting, said Wood and his accomplice, who has yet to be identified, targeted the Keel Row in the early hours of September 15 last year. Mr Anderson added: "The point of entry is a window that's been broken. CCTV shows the offence.

"Two people are involved. One of them goes inside the pub. However, one of the offenders injures himself and leaves blood at the point of entry and that blood is analysed, it comes back and it's from this defendant."

Mr Anderson continued: "The defendant is heavily convicted and there is relevant convictions on his record. His last conviction was in 2019. The Crown would say there must have been some planning involved here, whether it was a very good plan is another matter."

The court heard that Wood was drunk at time time and had little recollection of his actions. David Parish, defending, said: "He is remorseful and ashamed of himself. He's deeply sorry and apologises unreservedly both to the court and to the land lady of the pub."
