A man was set to appear in court charged with rape after reports that a woman was sexually assaulted in a London park.

Met Police were called at 5.23am on Sunday following the alleged assault near St George’s Way, which borders Burgess Park, in Southwark.

A 25-year-old woman was taken to hospital for assessment and is being supported by specialist officers.

David Joseph, 31, of Elephant and Castle, has been charged with two counts of rape, assault by penetration, robbery, non-fatal strangulation and possession of cannabis.

He was arrested on Sunday and was remanded in custody to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, Scotland Yard told the Standard.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 with the reference 1448/25SEP.
