Burger King to open new Swansea branch in Uplands creating 30 jobs

Burger King has confirmed it is opening a new location in the Uplands area of Swansea. The exact location has not been publicly announced yet but WalesOnline understands the restaurant will fill the empty unit previously occupied by GDK (German Doner Kebab) in Uplands Crescent.

Management at GDK decided to close the restaurant in October 2022 as they felt Swansea's Uplands had "changed significantly" since first opening there six years ago. A couple of months later locals spotted construction workers in the empty unit but at the time Burger King denied that they were looking to open a restaurant in Uplands.

Now, though, the chain has confirmed it is preparing to open an eatery in Uplands though an exact date has not yet been confirmed. For more stories about Uplands go here and you can get the biggest Swansea news stories straight to your inbox by signing up to our newsletter here.

A spokesman for Burger King said the new branch will operate for takeaway, home delivery, and click and collect orders. "What’s more the new site will bring over 30 new jobs to the local area with recruitment for legendary team members to join the Burger King family now open," they added. "Stay tuned for more details around opening date."

The announcement comes just weeks after the owners of Parc Tawe in Swansea, a company called Centurion, said they'd like to see Burger King open there. In January Centurion submitted a request to Swansea Council for planning permission to develop the new drive-thru fast-food outlet near Costa Coffee in the car park area.

It's understood extensive works would have to take place, including excavating the ground to construct the foundations of the new building and removing some trees, but the new 2,800-sq-ft development would offer another dining choice for shoppers and visitors to Parc Tawe and would also house 10 electric vehicle charging bays.

A previous application for a Burger King drive-thru to be developed on the same site was submitted back in December 2020. At the time the burger chain proposed a new venue with seats for 68 people, a terrace, and a drive-thru and said the proposed branch would create 36 jobs with a mix of full- and part-time roles. However Swansea Council planning officers rejected the application in January 2022 as they felt the proposed development would have a negative visual impact at a "prime gateway location" to the city. They also feared the new development would result in an unsafe environment for pedestrians and drivers.

The latest application acknowledged the previous rejection but noted that in the time since the last application Parc Tawe had seen several new units open up at the retail park as well as useful alterations to access to the site from the A4067. You can recap our coverage of the application for Burger King to open in Parc Tawe in a previous article here.
