Burger King makes major change to drinks packaging for customers who are dining in

Restaurant chain Burger King has taken a major step towards becoming more sustainable by removing all lids from its plastic cups for diners sat in restaurants nationwide.

The chain hopes to ditch single-use plastic by 2025. This announcement comes after the burger joint decided to remove plastic toys from junior meals in 2019.

A statement from Burger King said: "This new initiative from Burger King UK is a bold step for quick-service restaurants across the UK - and it’s a big one. The initiative is predicted to remove a whopping 17 million plastic lids from circulation and save over 30,000kg of plastic every single year.

"Cutting down on single-use plastic is an important goal for Burger King UK. Burger King UK has an active approach to sustainability and clear commitments under the Burger King for Good framework."

When customers visit and dine in a Burger King chain in the UK they can expect to find their soft drink of choice come without a lid on it, so make sure to remember that before taking a sip in case it spills down you.

This is a big move for the fast food chain and could be a massive driver for other similar eateries to follow suit.

Burger King is also keen for its customers to know that this is not the end of the sustainability road and to expect further measures to restrict plastic usage.

Katie Evans from Burger King UK said: "We’re excited to be introducing this permanent removal of plastic lids in restaurant, ultimately reducing single-use plastics. Our Meltdown campaign in 2019, removing plastic toys from King Jr Meals, was the first significant step on our journey and this next step will take us closer to reaching our target of removing all single-use plastic by 2025.

"But there’s no stopping there. The Burger King for Good framework sets out several more sustainability commitments, such as having a 50% meat-free menu by 2030.

"As a step towards this and building on the success of the month-long meat-free Leicester Square takeover, the chain has recently announced that one of its Bristol restaurants will be undergoing a two-week plant-based takeover, turning it completely meat-free from 26th October to 9th November 2022."

So the next tine you dine in a Burger King keep an eye out for these new sustainability measures.
