Burger King has announced a huge change to their packaging that will affect every one of their UK restaurants. The new initiative forms part of the fast food chain’s bid to eliminate all single-use plastic in the next three years.
From today (October 24), those ordering soft drinks when dining in will no longer receive a lid with their cup.
This new initiative is a bold step that aims to remove a whopping 17 million plastic lids from circulation and save over 30,000kg of plastic every year.

Plastic lids will no longer be automatically served on drinks when ordered dining in at Burger King UK restaurants nationwide, however, lids will be available on request.
The following list of drinks will no longer be served with a lid:
-
Coca Cola®
-
Diet Coke®
-
Coke Zero®
-
Sprite Zero®
-
Fanta®
-
Sprite
-
Dr Pepper
-
Freestyle drinks
-
Frozen drinks
-
Milkshakes
There will still be lids on all hot drinks, as well as takeaway and delivery orders due to health and safety precautions.
It’s certainly not the first time Burger King have made attempts to cut down on their plastic use, either. Back in 2019, their Meltdown campaign saw Burger King remove all plastic toys from King Jr Meals and meltdown unwanted plastic toys for recycling.
Katie Evans from Burger King UK said: “We’re excited to be introducing this permanent removal of plastic lids in restaurants, ultimately reducing single-use plastics. Our Meltdown campaign in 2019, removing plastic toys from King Jr Meals, was the first significant step on our journey and this next step will take us closer to reaching our target of removing all single-use plastic by 2025.”
It’s one of many sustainable commitments Burger King are making, with hopes to have a 50 per cent meat-free menu by 2030.As a step towards this, the chain has recently announced that one of its Bristol restaurants will be undergoing a two-week plant-based takeover, turning it completely meat-free from October 26 to November 9, 2022.
So, next time you go to order at Burger King, don’t be shocked that your drink hasn’t come with a lid - and think twice about if you actually need one.
