Burger King aims to open in Swansea's Parc Tawe more than two years after being rejected

The owners of Parc Tawe retail park in Swansea city centre want to see a Burger King drive-thru restaurant open up on the site. Centurion has submitted a request to Swansea Council for planning permission to develop the new drive-thru fast-food outlet near Costa Coffee in the car park area.

It's understood extensive works would have to take place, including excavating the ground to construct the foundations of the new building and removing some trees, but the new 2,800 square foot development would offer another dining choice for shoppers and visitors to the area and would also house 10 electric vehicle charging bays.

If approved, Burger King would be the first fast food outlet to open in Parc Tawe retail park - though there are various other eateries there including Denny's diner, india india Indian restaurant, Double Zero ice-cream shop and Treatz dessert cafe. Other businesses and venues at Parc Tawe include a bowling alley, Flashpoint indoor climbing centre, Ninja Warrior activity venue, Barnardo's charity shop, B&M food and homeware shop and Plantasia tropical zoo which has recently announced it will be launching the 'world's biggest escape room of its kind' next month. More on that here.

A previous application for a Burger King drive-thru to be developed on the same site was submitted back in December, 2020. At the time, the burger chain proposed a new eatery with seats for 68 people, a terrace and a drive-thru and said the new eatery would create 36 jobs, a mix of full and part-time roles. Unfortunately for the company, Swansea Council planning officers rejected the application in January, 2022 as they felt the proposed development would have a negative visual impact at a "prime gateway location" to the city. They also feared the new development would result in an unsafe environment for pedestrians and drivers. You can get the biggest Swansea news stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

The latest application acknowledges the previous rejection but notes that in the time since the last application, Parc Tawe has seen several new units open-up at the retail park, as well as useful alterations to access to the site from the A4067.

"Since submission of the previous May 2021 TA [transport assessment] and October 2021 TN [transport note], the retail offering at the Parc Tawe South Retail Park area has altered somewhat, with for example the development / addition of a new ALDI unit, Ninja Warrior UK Adventure Park, and climbing centre unit," the application notes.

"Further changes have also been undertaken to the layout of the Parc Tawe South main car park area, with a new entry only junction developed from the A4067 in the east of the site, and the total parking provision also changing from approximately 742 space sat the time of submitting the previous reports, to 772 spaces currently.

"Further to this, the minimum allowed stay at the Parc Tawe South car park areas has also changed from two-hours at the time of submitting the previous reports, to three-hours currently."

Currently, the application for planning permission for a new Burger King drive-thru eatery at Parc Tawe is "being considered". This means it hasn't been accepted or rejected by council officers yet.
