As the Chicago Bulls attempt to navigate their way through a rocky start to their 2023-24 campaign, another looming issue hangs above their head. DeMar DeRozan, who has re-blossomed into an All-Star since signing with the Bulls in 2021, is due a contract extension, as he’s in the final year of his deal.
According to recent reports, negotiations between DeRozan and the team haven’t been going well, and the two sides are far apart in regard to terms. At 34 years old, DeRozan only has so many years left in the NBA, and the Bulls aren’t exactly in the title mix at the moment, so there are a lot of factors to consider.
During a recent chat with KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, DeRozan even spoke about not knowing when he plans on retiring.
“Me having kids it has crossed my mind for the simple fact of you miss so much time,” DeRozan said when asked if he’s thought about when he wants to retire. “You miss your kids. You want to be there to support your kids and see their activities. As you get older, that perspective comes into play. How much more are you willing to miss? How much more do you have to give to the game? It crosses my mind, especially when I’m with my kids. But I don’t know the answer yet.
Extending DeRozan would preserve the current core, but is it worth it? And when will DeRozan retire?
