A man has been banned from keeping dogs for two years after his pet British-American bulldog cross mauled a cockapug.
Andrew Whelan pleaded guilty on June 22 to being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury, handling stolen goods, and possessing the Class B drug cannabis. Court documents said the dog attack happened on Tuesday, February 8, when 36-year-old Whelan's British-American bulldog cross "Odin" injured a cockapug and its male owner on Weymouth Close.
Cheshire Police reported at the time that a dog had suffered a "serious injury to its leg" and the man walking it received "small cuts" to his hands. A post on social media from the cockapug's other owner said the attacking bulldog had "jumped the fence" and mauled her pet’s leg, leaving him “traumatised”.

The handling stolen goods offence stemmed from December 23, when Whelan - of Weymouth Close, Murdishaw, Runcorn - “dishonestly undertook or assisted in the retention, removal, disposal or realisation of stolen goods, namely the keys to a Ford Zetec”.
His cannabis charge related to the same date of December 23.
District Judge Nicholas Sanders, sitting at North Cheshire Magistrates’ Court in Warrington, banned Whelan from keeping a dog for two years, and ordered him to carry out up to 30 days on a rehabilitation activity requirement as part of a community order to last until February 29, 2024.
Whelan was told to pay £1,000 in compensation, and was placed on a tag with curfew to run until January 16, and which requires him to remain at home from 7pm to 7am each night. An order was issued for Odin to be destroyed, and a fine of £80 in relation to the cannabis was issued.
