Bull seal Maximus chills out on a dinghy in Pembrokeshire

A bull seal nicknamed Maximus decided to chill out in the August sunshine aboard an inflatable yellow dinghy.

The lazy sea mammal seemed entirely nonplussed by his excited audience as he let it all hang out off the Pembrokeshire coast on Thursday. But onlookers aboard a Pembrokeshire Islands tour to Skomer Island were delighted as their boat slipped past the seal lolling about on the dinghy.

Captured by Sarah-Jane Absalom, a reporter for the Western Telegraph, Maximus appeared to be taking the ultimate chill pill as he took a cruise of his own. The dinghy, tied to a buoy in the small inlet where boats depart for Skomer Island, remained stationary while Maximus surveyed the activity around him.

There's no doubt he looked supremely unbothered as he soaked up the summer sun. Last summer, Pembrokeshire visitors were treated to the antics of Wally the Walrus, who was also known to hitch a ride on empty boats and became quite the local celebrity after a brief stay in Tenby.

Pembrokeshire is home to two types of seal the Atlantic grey and the Common or Harbour seal. A keen eye will distinguish the different shades of grey and brown on rocky beaches or spot a bobbing head followed by a bulbous body swimming just offshore. West Wales is home to about 5,000 Atlantic grey seals.

More and more seals will be spotted around Skomer as they head to the shore to pup. Seals and their fluffy white pups are usually seen between August and November.
