Fashion loves a motley crew — and unlikely pairings have become something of a staple for Daniel Lee, creative director of Burberry as of last year.
Guests at his debut show, in February 2022, counted Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Stormzy and Tottenham's Son Heung-Min. In his Highbury Fields extravaganza this September, pictures of Kylie Minogue sat front row slotted amongst the cast of Top Boy and Burna Boy sent the internet squealing.
Burberry's Spring 2024 campaign, out now, keeps tight to the path so far trodden. Pictured about London, from Soho’s infamous The French House pub to Portobello Market and Bar Italia, a host of household names smolder in next season's checks.
Amongst model shots, including modern-day supers Jourdan Dunn and He Cong, are Arsenal's beaming Bukayo Saka, actor Rachel Weisz, Blur’s Damon Albarn and singer Tems. Jessie Buckley wears oversized double denim with rose printed cuffs, Matthew Ball, principal dancer at The Royal Ballet, giggles in a moss-coloured cardigan and sunnies, and Iris Law is pictured cross-armed in a creamy, quilted bomber jacket.
It is, as it has been since Lee’s arrival, a veritable star-fest. The question is, will it pay off? Last week, the company reported it was unlikely to hit its annual forecasts, as operating profits fell 15 per cent in the six months to September. In this time, revenues grew 4 per cent to £1.4bn, however shares still fell 9 per cent after the announcement came on the morning of November 16.
Shareholders will be hoping the creative director’s A-lister heavy vision has what it takes to turn the tide.
