New budget hampers which contain food costing 'less than one pound per meal' have been launched to help people struggling with the cost of living crisis. Online food retailer Musclefood has launched two hampers priced at £45 and £59, which include foods like chicken, mince, sausages and meatballs.
The £59 Value Hamper has 7.3kg of meat, which can feed a family 66 meals working out at just under 90p per meal, according to Musclefood. The £45 hamper has 5.2kg of meat to make 44 meals, which costs less than £1.05 per portion. Each hamper comes with a guide to help families come up with low cost meals.
The launch comes as inflation is at a 40 year high, with people relying on foodbanks more often. The Trussell Trust handed out over 2.1 million emergency food parcels between April 2021 and March 2022 - an increase of 14 per cent compared to the same period in 2019-20.

Nick Preston from Musclefood.com said: “It’s 2022, we’ve lived through a pandemic, no one should be going hungry and living hand to mouth to feed themselves and their families. We’ve all heard the stories of people having to choose between heating and eating.
"The really sad thing is that number is only going to get higher as the cost of living rises. That’s why we want to do our bit to ease the pressure on people across the UK.
"We’ve launched these two value hampers to do just that. The cost per head is kept low. We all know the tricks to make food stretch even further - I’m sure savvy parents could certainly make a lot more than we’ve estimated.
“These hampers will fill the freezer and the family for weeks. It won’t take away the worry of managing the budget, but it will go some way to easing the pressure.”
The two value hampers are now available to buy at Musclefood.com. To see more details about what they contain, click here.
