Budget 2023 to see airport security change for liquids and laptops when travelling

Some very welcome changes are on the way for passengers heading through Cork Airport following Tuesday’s budget announcement.

A major update to the security system will be of a significant benefit to passengers when it is put into action.

According to the manager of the airport, anyone travelling through security will no longer need to take out liquids and laptops from their cabin baggage.

The new and modern security system is set to make life much easier for those travelling abroad after the 'state-of-the-art' system was announced in line with funding received in Budget 2023.

Government will be supplying a huge €6 million boost for the airport, and speaking on the announcement, Roy O’Driscoll, Acting Managing Director at Cork Airport said: "The €6m funding will be put towards the upgrading of our passenger security screening area.

“This upgrade will end the need to remove laptops and liquids from cabin baggage and will enhance the fantastic customer experience that passengers currently receive at Cork Airport."

Minister of State, Hildegarde Naughton said that the capital funding was given "in recognition of the important role of Cork Airport to the economy of the south region and nationally."

The news comes after Cork Airport published its 'biggest ever' winter schedule of flights, with new routes and extended services being announced for the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023.

Ryanair is kicking off two new routes with twice-weekly services to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport and Newcastle in the UK.

The budget airline has also extended several summer routes into the winter including services to Valencia, Milan, Venice and Faro.

Ryanair will also operate services to favoured sunny destinations like Alicante (twice weekly), Malaga (three times weekly), Lanzarote (three times weekly), Tenerife (twice weekly) and Gran Canaria (weekly).

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus will operate a twice-weekly service to Lanzarote and will maintain essential connectivity to the major European hub airports of Amsterdam and London Heathrow.
