Buddhist statues in Thailand splashed with water as Songkran New Year festival starts

People have doused water on Buddhist statues at temples across Thailand to celebrate the traditional start of the country's New Year. The time-honoured Songkran festival began on Sunday.

Locals, tourists and others visited the Wat Arun temple in the capital Bangkok to pour water on Buddha images in an act that symbolises cleansing, reverence and good fortune.

But some people in Thailand are concerned that the tourism industry could be hurt by the aftereffects of a major earthquake that hit Myanmar on 28 March.
