Buckley town centre on lockdown after bomb squad called to suspicious package

A large stretch of a town centre was cordoned off and bomb squad members was sent to the scene following reports of a suspicious package.

At least five police cars were called to the town centre with officers in attendance as the incident was investigated in Buckley, North Wales.

The town post officer was evacuated before police announced that the 'suspect' package has been identified as "no risk to the public" at around 11am.

Police had asked members of the public to avoid the town centre, the Daily Post has reported.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police Flintshire: "We are pleased to confirm that the ongoing incident in Buckley has come to an end and roads are now being re-opened.

Superintendent Mark Williams said: “We’d like to thank the residents and visitors of Buckley for their cooperation following this morning’s incident.

“Thankfully, following an assessment, it was found that there was no risk to the public.”

According to people at the scene there was a 100m cordon in place and the Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal present.

Buckley is situated in north east Wales and has a population of around 15,000 people.

Today's incident comes as Britain's terror threat level was raised to severe after a bomb exploded at Liverpool Women's Hospital on Sunday.

The change means the security forces believe another attack is "highly likely".

Earlier the police had tweeted: "Please be advised that due to an ongoing incident in Buckley town centre, a police cordon has been put in place which will cause some disruption.

"Officers are at the location and the public are advised to stay away for the time being.

"Thanks in advance for your cooperation."

The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for comment.
