Buckingham Palace staff's one-ingredient trick to make Cucumber sandwiches taste amazing

If you recently saw our piece on eating like the Queen for a day, then you'll know that Her Majesty enjoys afternoon tea most days.

As part of this, she enjoys finger sandwiches cut into circles, including raspberry jam pennies and cucumber ones.

But it seems the chefs at Buckingham Palace have a secret ingredient they add to the humble cucumber sandwiches to elevate the taste.

This is according to television presenter Jenny Hanley, who recently appeared on Boom Radio to share her experience of attending a Garden Party at the palace.

She explained that while there she enjoyed cucumber sandwiches and said they were "wonderful".

Jenny recalled: "The most wonderful thing that happened at one of the Buckingham Palace garden parties that I was lucky enough to go to was not the fact of the scones but the cucumber sandwiches.

"They may be a joke to some people, but when you’ve had a cucumber sandwich out on the grass at the back of Buckingham Palace and the sun is shining and there’s mint in it, then you know you’ve made it!

"I will never make a cucumber sandwich without chopped mint in it again."

The sandwiches were made with white bread, buttered and topped with sliced cucumber, a dash of mint and a sprinkle of pepper.

Alongside the sandwiches, The Queen enjoys a cup of tea and her preferences are for Earl Grey or Assam, with a splash of milk added afterwards.

She also loves a slice of chocolate biscuit cake, according to her former chef, Darren McGrady.

The sweet treat is made with dark chocolate and Rich Tea biscuits and even Prince William and Kate Middleton are said to be fans, with the couple reportedly serving some at their wedding.

Jenny Hanley presents a show on Boom Radio every Saturday at 2pm-4pm. Boom is a UK-wide national radio station principally aimed at Baby Boomers aged 60 to 75-years-old. Jenny will be talking about her royal encounters on her show on Saturday, June 4. See www.boomradiouk.com/jenny-hanley.
