Buckingham Palace releases plans for Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral in Westminster Abbey

Buckingham Palace has released the final details of the state funeral to be held for the late Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey on Monday evening, Australian time.

About 2,000 people are expected to attend what will be the first state funeral to be held in the UK since Winston Churchill's in 1965.

Here's how the day will play out in London.

6:30am UK time (3:30pm AEST): The lying in state ends

After four days of lying in state, the public viewing of the Queen's coffin at Westminster Hall will end at 6:30am local time, when the final members of the public are admitted.

The next stage will be moving her coffin to Westminster Abbey.

The abbey's gates will open at 8am (5pm AEST), before a bearer party at Westminster Hall moves the Queen's coffin from the catafalque to the waiting State Gun Carriage of the Royal Navy.

In the past, this particular gun carriage has been used for the funerals of the Queen's father King George VI, Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and Winston Churchill.

10:44am UK time (7:44pm AEST): The Queen's coffin leaves Westminster Hall

The carriage, drawn by 142 members of the Royal Navy, will leave Westminster Hall followed by King Charles III and members of the royal family.

The procession is expected to arrive at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey eight minutes later.

11am UK time (8pm AEST): The funeral service begins

Buckingham Palace says around 2,000 people will attend the funeral service, including members of the royal family, foreign dignitaries, and guests from Commonwealth nations.

The service will be conducted by the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland will read passages from scriptures during the service.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will give a sermon and the commendation before the dean pronounces the blessing.

11:55am UK time (8:55pm AEST):  The service draws to a close

As the end of the service approaches, the Last Post will play.

That will be followed by two minutes of silence inside Westminster Abbey, and throughout the United Kingdom.

Reveille, the national anthem, and a lament played by the Queen's Piper will round out the service, which will end at midday.

12:15pm UK time (9:15pm AEST): The procession travels to Wellington Arch

After the coffin is returned to the State Gun Carriage, the procession, including King Charles III, will begin the journey to Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, about 3.5 kilometres away from Westminster Abbey.

The route will see the Queen's coffin travel down The Mall for the final time, and pass Buckingham Palace.

Minute guns will be fired in Hyde Park, and Big Ben will toll throughout the procession.

The procession is scheduled to arrive at Wellington Arch at 1pm (10pm AEST).

There, the Queen's coffin will be placed in a hearse as it leaves London for the final time.

The coffin will leave for Windsor, the parade will give a royal salute, and the national anthem will be played again.

Members of the royal family will follow the hearse to Windsor by car.

3:00pm UK time (Midnight AEST): The hearse arrives in Windsor

At around 3:10pm (12:10am AEST) the hearse will slow to join a procession to St George's Chapel via the Long Walk.

King Charles and senior members of the royal family are expected to join the procession half an hour later, when it reaches the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle.

Minute guns will be fired at Windsor Castle during the procession, and the Sebastopol and Curfew Tower bells will toll.

The procession will then stop at the bottom steps of St George's Chapel, before the Queen's coffin is moved inside.

4:00pm UK time (1am AEST): The committal service begins

Inside St George's Chapel, a smaller service of about 800 guests will be held. Members of the royal family will attend the service, along with past and present members of the Queen's household, governors-general and prime ministers.

Dean of Windsor David Conner will conduct the service, and the Choir of St George's Chapel will sing.

Before the final hymn, the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre — items the Queen took ownership of during her coronation — will be removed from the coffin and placed on the altar.

Once the final hymn ends, the King will place the Queen's Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier Guards on the coffin, and the Lord Chamberlain will "break" his Wand of Office and place it on the coffin too.

The coffin will then be lowered into the royal vault as the Dean of Windsor reads a psalm, with a commendation pronouncing the styles and titles of the Queen.

The Sovereign's Piper will play a lament, and the music inside the chapel will begin to fade as he walks away.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will pronounce the blessing, and God Save the King will be sung.

7:30pm UK time (4:30am AEST): A private burial service is held

This particular service will only be attended by the royal family at 4:30am AEST, and will be conducted by the Dean of Windsor inside the King George VI Memorial Chapel.

The Queen will then be buried with her late husband, Prince Philip.
